Andorra pairs one of Europe’s lightest tax regimes for retirees with a public pension system that works nothing like Spain’s or France’s. This guide covers the retirement age, how many years you need to contribute, how the CASS points system converts contributions into a monthly pension, and what happens to the years you worked abroad.

For every other rate that affects retirees, see the complete Andorra tax rates 2026 reference.

What is the retirement age in Andorra?

The standard retirement age is 65, for employees and self-employed alike.

Early retirement is possible from 61, but only with a long contribution record (around 40 years) and a reduction of roughly 7% per year of early exit. In practice, most residents wait until 65.

You can also work past 65 and keep earning points, which raises your final pension.

How many years do you need to contribute?

  • Lifetime monthly pension: at least 15 years (180 months) of CASS contributions.
  • Between 5 and 15 years: no monthly pension, but CASS pays out your accumulated rights as a one-off capital sum.
  • Under 5 years: those periods only count if they can be combined with contributions made in a treaty country (see below).

The CASS points system, explained

Unlike Spain — which calculates your pension on the last 25 years of salary — Andorra’s pension reflects your entire career through a points mechanism:

  1. Every month, the retirement branch of your contribution (12% of salary within the total 22% — employees pay 3.5%, employers 8.5%) buys pension points at a purchase price set yearly by the government — around €26.6 per point in 2026.
  2. At retirement, your accumulated points convert into a pension at the point’s sale value (about €2.77 in 2026), indexed to inflation.
  3. CASS publishes the exact yearly values, and you can check your points balance anytime through your personal area at cass.ad.

Ballpark example: on a €2,700 salary (Andorra’s 2026 average is around €2,670), about €324 a month flows into the retirement branch, buying roughly 12 points. After 30 years that’s ~4,400 points — an approximate pension of €1,000/month at today’s values. This is why most professionals in Andorra add private savings on top of the public pension.

Worked in Spain, France or Portugal? Your years still count

Andorra has bilateral social-security agreements with Spain, France and Portugal based on totalization: periods contributed in each country are added together to meet minimum thresholds, and each system then pays its proportional share.

  • Spain: treaty of 9 November 2001. Ten years in Spain plus twelve in Andorra qualifies you in both systems — you receive two pensions, each pro-rated.
  • France: convention signed 12 December 2000, in force since 2003, with the same mechanism.
  • You file from your country of residence, which acts as the single window for both systems.

If you’re weighing the move itself, here’s our guide to moving to Andorra from Spain and the tax implications.

How pensions are taxed in Andorra

The headline advantage over Spain or France:

  • The first €24,000/year is tax-free; 5% from €24,000 to €40,000; a maximum of 10% above that.
  • No wealth tax, no inheritance tax.
  • One caveat: Spanish public pensions remain taxable in Spain under the double-tax treaty; private pensions (plans, insurance) are taxed only in Andorra.
